Translations
Translations, by Irish playwright Brian Friel, also deals with the dynamics of cultures as they collide and merge. The play is set in Northern Ireland during the 19th century. British troops have set up camp to survey the countryside and standardize the complex Irish placenames in an effort to make a new English map. They are assisted in the task by Owen, the son of the local schoolmaster, Hugh, returning to the townland of Ballybeg after a six-year absence. Only as a youthful British lieutenant becomes further and further entranced with the local language and a very pretty Irish girl does Owen realize the ramifications of his work and how even small changes in his community have irrevocable consequences.  May 13-15 & 17-21 at 8pm and May 15 & 21 at 2pm, HSSB Performing Arts Theatre, UCSB.  Tickets: $13-$17 or  www.dramadance.ucsb.edu.
